What are we learning?
Reading:
Nonfiction Readers GROW KNOWLEDGE!
This month as readers we are switching our focus to nonfiction! We focusing on the details in nonfiction books, pointing out what we are noticing and learning, and asking questions as we read. We know that nonfiction writing has lots of text features, so we are learning about those features and how to use them to learn a lot about our topic! We know that learning to read nonfiction can be like learning a brand new language. We look out for keywords as we read and try to learn the lingo of our topic so we can sound like experts when we retell!
Writing:
Nonfiction: Writing to teach others.
We have moved from writing about ourselves to writing nonfiction books to teach readers about something we are experts in. From soccer to baking a cake, gymnastics to Minecraft, 2B writers are learning to write to inform others. We are searching in the nonfiction books we read for author's craft moves we can use in our own books, and "squeezing our brains" to put as much information as possible on each page!
In the second bend, 2B writers are thinking of their audience before they write, and keeping them in mind while they write each chapter. With every chapter they write, they are thinking "Who is my audience?" and "What do they want to learn?"
